The peaks of the Olympic peninsula were formed by the tectonic action of the Juan de Fuca Plate pushing beneath the North American Plate (subduction) resulting in the upheaval of the ancient sea floor made of basalt rock that today form the jagged peaks of the Olympic Mountains.
