Beacon in the Cosmos
Beacon in the Cosmos
The Milky Way galaxy is our home, yet few have seen it other than pictures in books or online. The spring and summer months are the prime viewing time in the northern hemisphere. I created this image of the Milky Way rising above Avon Pier (Avon, NC on the Outer Banks) in mid-April 2024. Using a 24mm lens and a single 20 second exposure I was able to capture the depth and color of the Milky Way while the pier was illuminated by the security lights of the pier. The “beacon” is a lighted flagpole on the pier and there was just enough moisture in the air to create the glow around it and the beam up into the heavens.
