One of North Carolina’s most unusual lighthouses, Oak Island Lighthouse was completed in 1958 and stands 153 feet tall. There is no spiral staircase as found in most older lighthouses, but instead a series of ships ladders with a total of 131 steps to the lantern gallery level. Additionally, the bands of color are not paint, but the concrete itself. Each section dyed prior to pouring so as to never need to be re-painted.
