Enhancing Patient Experience and
Perceived Quality of Care Through Design and Décor
Researchers at Cornell University found that waiting rooms that were nicely furnished, well-lit, contained artwork, and were warm in appearance produced a higher level of perceived quality in patients. In fact, there is a wealth of research that demonstrates a link between patient area design and aesthetics and patient perception of quality of care. (examples: Devlin, 1995; Becker & Douglass, 2008).
The waiting room in particular plays a key role in the patient experience. It often is the area the patient spends the most time in during a visit. It is also the first encounter with the practice. And as the old adage goes, “There’s no second chance to make a first impression, so you better get it right the first time.” With all of the complexity and cost of the current healthcare system, waiting room design and décor is often overlooked by practitioners. Yet, the addition of update of artwork is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to enhance the quality of a space, and thereby the perceived quality of care.
Additionally, it has been shown that reducing patient stress and anxiety can improve patient health and improve outcomes of care. One easy way to create a more tranquil and calming environment is through the addition of nature inspired artwork. New artwork can be acquired quickly, and installed with minimal effort and little interruption to office operations.

As summer fades to autumn, leaves begin to change from bright green to yellow.
The original image (above) was captured using intentional camera movement (ICM). Moving the camera vertically with the shutter open. The leaves of the subject tree, a Rose of Sharon, were just beginning to change from green to yellow, signalling the end of summer.
Fading Summer 2 (three panel set)
By segmenting the image into three panels (triptych), the vertical lines are accentuated adding positive energy.
