Oregon Inlet Lifsaving Station

from $65.00

The Oregon Inlet Lifesaving Station has a long and stormy history. The 1898 station that stands today is the third to hold its name. The first, bult in 1874, was replaced in 1888 due to shifting of the channel, the second was destroyed by a storm in 1897. The station currently sits on the south side of the inlet. It was heavly modified in the 1930s and extended again in 1979. The station was later abondoned by the US Coast Guard in 1988. The stastion was transfer to Dare Co and later to the State of North Carolina. A storm of another kind has enveloped the site as multiple parties have different ideas on its future.
