The Watch Tower
The Watch Tower
Topsail Island was undeveloped until the early 1940s when the US Navy came to the island for Operation Bumblebee. For four years the Navy tested it first supersonic missiles and the ramjet engine. A series of towers were built down the island as observation platforms for the missile tests. Here Tower #3, one of the remaining structures from the project catches the light at the end of the day.
